How much does adoption cost?
Foster Child Adoption
DCFS will usually reimburse you up to $2,000 per child. At the Utah Adoption Law Center, we want you to be fully reimbursed so we try to keep the costs below that amount. Of course, with multiple foster children being adopted in one case, there are economies of scale. For example, a 3-child case will cost closer to $4,000 rather than $6,000. These costs include the attorney fee, court filing fee, certified copies of the decree of adoption and (for children born in Utah) three copies of the new, post-adoption birth certificate.
Stepchild Adoption
An uncontested one-stepchild adoption generally costs about $3,500. This is a ballpark figure, however, since the actual cost depends on several factors (e.g., ease or difficulty of obtaining the non-custodial parent's consent).
Private Adoption
An uncontested private one-child adoption generally costs around $3,500, depending on several factors. Often, a home study is required which is a significant additional expense in the adoption process. Of course, at the Utah Adoption Law Center, we look for ways to help keep costs down.
